Did an Astronomical Body Cause the Global Floods of Ancient Myths with Its Gravitational Tidal Floods? - Part 1

The following is a unifying scientific hypothesis that connects diverse ancient flood myths with mainstream scientific fact. Currently the biblical narrative of the great flood falls short of explaining some observable scientific facts. Here are a few examples:

  • All freshwater fish should have died in the flood.
  • What did the carnivores eat after they got off the ark and ate all the herbivores?
  • Where did the immense amount of water come from to be able to cover the world’s highest mountains? And even if it happened, where did all this water recede to after the flood?

Worldwide Flood Myths

Despite such unexplained inconsistencies, flood myths have persisted not only in the Abrahamic scriptures but also in many other distant, varied, and unconnected cultures. And some of them are rich in details bearing an uncanny resemblance to Noah’s tale. In his book ‘Fingerprints of the Gods’, Graham Hancock examines at length the many legends from across the world - and some follow a strikingly similar narrative: A man or a couple are forewarned by the gods of the impending catastrophe, instructed to build an ark and gather animals of each kind, and so on...

Here are a few that make up the long list:

  • Middle East - The Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh - the story of Utnapishtim,
  • Central America - the Aztec myth of Coxcoxtly , Mechoacanesecan myth of Tezpi , The Mayan myth of the deluge that swept over the entire earth at the end of the Fourth Sun
  • South America - The Chibkas of Central Colombia and their story of Bochika and his wife , The Cañaris of Ecuador , Villa Coto story of the Peruvian natives , The Arauchnaians of pre-Columbian Chile and the legend of ThegTheg mountain , The Pehuenche and the Yamana of Tierra del Fuego
  • North America - The Inuit of Alaska and northern Canada, the Luiseno of Lower California, The Hurons, Iroquois, Chickasaws, Sioux
  • Asia - The Chinese, Malayans, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, and the Karens of Burma all have records or legends of a global deluge
  • Australia and Oceania - There are myths from Hawaii, Samoa, and several Aboriginal peoples of the north tropical part of Australia
  • Greece, India, Egypt – The myth of Deucalion and Pyrrha (the Greek Noah) , The Vedic Indian myth of Manu , A funerary text found in the tomb of Pharaoh Seti I describes the destruction of humanity by a deluge and the reasons for this catastrophe are set out in the Book of the Dead...

So, the prevailing question remains - was there a single global flood, or were there a series of localized floods? And why does each myth talk about a global deluge that zeroed out humanity?

Curiously, the Yamana have left us an uncanny clue; their flood myth carries an interesting detail: “The moon woman caused the flood. This was a time of great upheaval.”

Could it be that an astronomical object - a centaur or a minor planet flew by the earth, far enough to not collide or be captured into orbit but close enough to cause an immense tidal wave with its gravitational pull? Such slingshot maneuvers are also commonly used by interplanetary spacecraft ever since the Mariner missions in the 60s, so there is nothing impossible or improbable in this type of motion.

Of the thousands of minor objects orbiting the sun, more than 150 such bodies are larger than 400 km (248.55 miles) in size. And some of those, the centaurs, have highly irregular orbits which cross the orbits of the major planets.

There has been much speculation about the existence of one such centaur body - commonly known as Planet X or Nibiru - a yet undetected and wildly speculative sphere - but such large centaur bodies do exist, and more are being discovered.

One such close encounter, albeit without an outright collision, could set off a catastrophic chain of events. Initially, the gravitational pull would wreak havoc in the world’s ocean levels by pulling up major tidal waves and carrying them across continents - a mega tsunami of sorts - sweeping away all in its path. The pull would also affect the atmosphere - note that many of the flood myths describe heavy winds and storms. It would also pull tectonic plates apart, causing major earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Additionally, with such a close flyby, Earth’s gravitational pull would alter the orbit of the asteroid and likely break it apart with some of the pieces possibly burning through the earth’s atmosphere and hitting the earth.

And of course, these events occurring many centuries before recorded history would only be retold by word of mouth and become unreliable. However, here comes some hard science.

The Science - Human Population Bottleneck

DNA scientists have observed that the accumulated mutations in the human genome are so few, when compared to other mammals, that the whole human population has as little genetic diversity as about a hundred apes. They attribute this to a recent evolutionary bottleneck when we came near extinction and the entire human population was reduced to about a few thousand individuals. This reduced the genetic diversity of the populations that arose after that.

The timeline of this bottleneck is hard to determine - many scientists base it on the Toba catastrophe of 70,000 years ago, but the ongoing estimate is that the European most recent common ancestor (mrca) may have lived as recently as 1000 years ago. Just note, mrca doesn’t mean there were no other people around.

Emerging Archaeological Evidence

Archaeologists also note that although intelligent humans (Homo sapiens) have existed for around 300 thousand years, we only have evidence of high culture or architecture as far back as 10000 BC. No building or any other trace of civilization has survived longer than that - and traditionally this has been attributed to the lack of organized human society.

However, more recently researchers like Graham Hancock, Stephen Mehler, and Brian Foerster, among many others, are looking into the possibility of older advanced civilizations that may have predated a global cataclysm of some sort. The archaeological evidence is mounting for a catastrophic event around 12,000 years BP, at the end of the last ice age, that would have brought human civilization to its knees.

Historians and Herodotus Give Evidence of Catastrophes

Although we are talking about pre-history, our earliest reliable historian - Herodotus - recounts a conversation with Egyptian priests - the great record keepers of the time - that mentions huge cataclysmic events decimating the populations of many nations, including the Athenians and causing them to start anew “like children”.

We even get a glimpse of a possible timeline - Herodotus estimates their history to be around 11000 years, extrapolating from the number of royal generations:

After this man the priests enumerated to me from a papyrus roll the names of other kings, three hundred and thirty in number; and in all these generations of men eighteen were Ethiopians, one was a woman, a native Egyptian, and the rest were men and of Egyptian race .”

The Global Megafauna Extinction of 12,000 BP

Paleontologists recognize the extinction of the mammalian megafauna as during the Holocene extinction 12,000 BP -  another temporal coincidence - but many scholars name its main cause as man.

This is generally assumed in the mainstream because the extinction coincided with the timeline of when modern humans spread across the new continents. However, the evidence is scant, correlation does not prove causation, and furthermore, if the DNA scientists are right about the human population bottleneck - a few thousand humans are unlikely to hunt any continental species to extinction, especially before the age of gunpowder.

The evidence here suggests an event was experienced by different peoples around the globe, possible during the same period. There is also evidence that the global population was severely affected by this, which is reflected in multiple accounts and ‘myths’ from around the world.

The author has hypothesized that a close encounter by an astronomical body could cause such disruption to the Earth that it would explain many of the myths and emerging science. But is it possible?

Part 2 looks into the science of such an event and explores the feasibility of this explanation.

Scientific Creationists have been working this issue for decades. Several of the starting assumptions are not necessarily correct.
1. Many FW fish can survive in marine environments. Also assumes current speciation and diversification was present 2400BC.
2. The Bible only acknowledges God giving (humans) permission to eat meat AFTER the Flood. Many assumptions about "Carnivore teeth" have been proven incorrect - there are lizards with such who are exclusively vegetarian. The Bible indicates that the climate and makeup of the Pre-Flood world was different - a water vapour canopy in the upper atmosphere gave a global Greenhouse Effect with little diurnal temperature variation (so large ectotherms consul function), filtered the sunlight and radiation so that ALL organisms were Giants (Fossil record), and optimised plant growth and nutrition to enable the above.
3. The Bible has TWO main sources: The Water Vapour Canopy (=RAIN) brought down by the astronomical body, and the "Wellsprings of the Deep" - underground aquifers and water stored within magma.
4. There is also assumptions about the AMOUNT of water needed. If the Continental drift was AFTER the Flood then our highest mountains today may not have existed back then. Numerous creationists have calculated there is more than enough water to have inundated the whole earth.

There are also the evidences that sea levels have been steadily rising (~500m) since the Flood (~2440 BC), and that ALL current continental land masses are SEDIMENTARY and show evidence of inland seas draining away.
This is quite apart from the fact that you can use Google Earth (NOT MAPS) to look at the Ark remains, just to the East of the village of Uzengili, Agri province, Turkey. It rests on "Judgment Slope", near "crow won't land", downhill from "To make a presentation of the sacrifice", across the valley from "Where the oars were reversed" (coll. where is slowed down), and not far from the "Valley of Eight" where Kazan "the place of Eight" rests. This is where the remains of Noah's house, graves of Noah and his wife, and other evidence was found.

In addition, most ancient historians wrote many years after the Flood, after the development of Pagan rebellion (started under Nimrod), and the myths and legends they quote have been heavily polluted by the same, and by mis-translations of dates.

The Bible is THE most accurate ancient document in existence, and is a quantum level above every other source, in terms of number of identical manuscripts, age of writing (within the lifetimes of authors/sources), internal consistency throughout (unmatched) and lack of hype (Biblical heroes are presented "warts and all" - their failings and successes recorded). To elevate other sources above the Biblical text is dangerous on many levels, particularly when the Bible pre-dates many of those sources.

Apart from the above, current theorising amongst Creationist Scientists is that an Astronomical body came close to the Earth, cracking the crust (Volcanic eruptions, plate movements, release of underground water AND warm oceans) and collapsing the vapour canopy. It also tilted the earth on its axis by nearly 90° (resulting in the snap-freezing of tropical Mammoths, some of which still have erections), and dragged the earth in its orbital path, so that a new equilibrium was established with a lightly longer year (originally believed to be 360 days). After the Flood the world was very different topographically, had different climate conditions resulting in poorer plant nutrition, and had an Ice Age (from volcanic debris in the atmosphere blocking sunlight and warm oceans preventing ice forming at the poles).

The evidence looks to point to a more recent mass world flood and catastrophe then just the Great Flood of the Biblical time. Though the Powers that be want the world to focus on that 12,000 or so flood of the distant pass what about the Mudfloods and Worldwide disasters of around 1760 to 1827, the Evidence cannot be hidden the Maps from that time are still available as is other evidence. Please look into. Thanks

This is the absolute best explanation I have every read. It is a bit heavy on the science, but it gives an excellent explanation for an astronomical body being the cause of the Great Flood.
