Article Submission Guidelines

Ancient Origins article submission

Ancient-Origins.net accepts submissions for articles to be published on its website in relation to human origins, mythology, ancient history, and historic places. With nearly 4 million visits per month, writing an article for Ancient Origins Magazine is an excellent way to gain recognition and share your expertise with peers and all those interested in ancient history.

Writers who wish to make an article submission, should follow the below guidelines:

Getting Started

Start by pitching your idea to the editors. Send an email to [email protected] with:

  1. A short proposal (1-2 paragraphs) explaining what you wish to write about, including the main theory, and any supporting evidence.
  2. A 1-2 paragraph biography including your academic, professional and/or personal experience as it relates to the topic, any books you have authored, and website link, if you have one.
  3. A photograph of yourself (preferably head and shoulders only). This will be used to create your writer profile if your article is published.

If you have a pre-written article, send it to the above email address along with point 2 and 3 above.

Originality

All articles being submitted must be original. This means that your work must be your own and specifically written for Ancient-Origins.net. Previously written articles that have been featured on another website will not be published.

Style and Format

Articles submitted should resemble a magazine feature rather than an academic paper. Articles may be scholarly, however the tone is often conversational and ‘light’, rather than formal.

Length should be between 1000 and 2200 words.

Simple text formatting should be used (Times New Roman, 12 point).

Interesting titles and subheadings are highly desirable

References should be placed at the end of the article (not in footnotes). Citations must be complete, including publishers.

The article should be sent in Word format, not PDF.

Images

The use of photographs and illustrations may be included and will be used at the discretion of the editors.  When submitting images for use with an article, the author is required to identify the source of the images, including direct links where relevant. Images should only be submitted if the author owns the copyright, has obtained written permission from the copyright holder, or has sources public domain or creative commons images. Imagery captions need to be placed at the end of the article.

Copyright

When submitting an article to Ancient-Origins.net, the author retains the copyright to the article, but Ancient-Origins.net shall have first publication rights, the right to reproduce and publicly display it in any of our publications, including the Ancient Origins Magazine, or our related site ancient-origins.es, and the right to authorize others to reproduce or reprint the article.

You may post your article on your personal and/or professional website, but only after one week has passed since publication on Ancient-Origins.net.

Editing

The Editorial Board reserves the right to edit submissions as necessary for clarity, substance, conciseness, grammar, style, and length. Authors may also be asked to revise their articles or provide additional information.

We keep the author's original concept, context, intent or idea intact when editing. Any major editorial revisions that affect the substance of an article will be cleared with the author prior to publication.

The format of the article will be edited to fit with the style of the website, and may include: additional images and graphics, a new title, and added subtitles.

Acceptance Policy

Your submission of an article does not constitute official acceptance for publication. Submitted articles are put to the Editorial Board for consideration and authors will be notified whether the article has been accepted.

Compensation

Ancient-Origins.net does not provide payment for voluntary article submissions. However, we do include a promotional line at the end of articles, which may link to a website or book page. If you are a published author, we can also promote your book across our social media outlets.

If you wish to be considered for paid writing positions, please send a copy of your CV and a writing sample to [email protected] .
