The Roman Army was one of the greatest fighting forces the world has ever seen. It was an army defined by the discipline, strength and skill of its soldiers. But how did the Romans whip new recruits into shape? After passing their initial probation period recruits faced four months of rigorous basic training, transforming from an ordinary citizen to a highly efficient legionary soldier.

Led by experienced centurions they started by mastering the basic step and marching long distances to build physical endurance. From there it was time to practice basic drill, formation and combat tactics. And that was just the beginning. Roman soldiers trained their entire military careers.
