An Elaborate Affair: Getting Dressed as an 18th Century Gentleman (Video)

Print

Dressing as an 18th-century gentleman was no easy feat. The process of getting dressed was highly regimented and required the help of a valet or servant to assist in the process. Each item of clothing was put on in a specific order, starting with a full shirt that had voluminous sleeves and ruffles at the wrist. Next came the stockings, breeches, waistcoat, and cravat. The shoes were then carefully selected, and a neck stock was tied around the neck before the coat was finally put on.

Accessories played an essential role in completing the fashionable look of an 18th-century gentleman. Wigs were commonly worn, and the style varied depending on the occasion and social status of the wearer. Hats were also worn and could be highly decorative, often featuring feathers or ribbons. Other accessories included walking sticks, gloves, and handkerchiefs. The fashion of the 18th century was highly formal and structured, and getting dressed was a lengthy process that required attention to detail and a keen sense of style.
