One of the many micro-nations in the Pacific is Nauru, once known as Pleasant Island. This small island has a rich and complex history. It is the third-smallest country in the world and, at one point in history, its inhabitants were among the wealthiest in the world. Now, the tiny nation faces an uncertain future, damaged by climate change, environmental degradation and a blackened name.

Archaeologists and historians have produced a number of curious finds which still await a logical explanation. The story of man will appear in a different light if the answers are ever found. If the following facts are well-founded, civilization might have had a much earlier source.

The distance from the only currently known home of the Denisovans in Altai region to the nearest point of Australia is roughly akin to the length of the Trans-Siberian railway, and yet it is looking increasingly likely that these ancient species of humanoids somehow made this epic journey deep in pre-history, perhaps 65,000 years ago.

Unearth the mysterious Denisovans, a human-like species coexisting with Neanderthals in Asia during the Lower and Middle Paleolithic eras. Only recently discovered in Siberia's Denisova Cave in 2008, the first evidence emerged as a small, ancient finger bone fragment from a young girl who lived 40,000 years ago.

Research into the Denisovan story is always fascinating. This group of ancient hominins has been something of a mystery ever since they were first discovered in 2010 as an extinct sister group to the Neanderthals. Bits and pieces of their tale are slowly coming to light and almost everything is a surprise. Take for example the new research on the first example of Denisovan remains found outside their famous Siberian cave; the location has shocked researchers for a couple of reasons.

For a people from whom one 41,000 year old finger bone fossil from a nine year old girl, along with a bracelet she wore, were (until recently) the only authenticated known artifacts, the mysterious Denisovans sure received lots of publicity.

At first sight, Kiribati armor might look a little strange, it is certainly not a suit of armor as we tend to think of it. It was surprisingly effective, given that it was made from coconut fibers, and little else. Kiribati society changed drastically after their first encounters with westerners, but their armor offers a fascinating glimpse into what Kiribati life used to be like.

A study has made a startling claim. It argues that an extinct species of humans, the Denisovans, may have mated with modern humans (Homo sapiens) as late as 15,000 years ago.

Archaeologists in Fiji have uncovered the remains of two old villages which were previously only known about from oral tradition passed down from generation to generation.
The historic discovery was made by a team from the Fiji Museum who carried out a survey in the Koroyanitu mountain range in Lautoka following a request from villagers who were keen to discover whether the stories passed down from their ancestors were true.

Has there ever been a more exciting adventure than when humans spread out across the globe with their primitive tools and not so much as a hand-drawn map? A new study of cranial shapes of prehistoric people shows it’s possible there were several migrations of Asians and possibly Australian or Polynesian people who undertook this great trek into the Americas thousands of years ago.
