Life in a Medieval Castle: More Rats Than Romance (Video)

Medieval castles have always held a certain fascination for people, conjuring up images of knights, royalty, and grandeur. However, the reality of life in these fortresses was far from glamorous. In fact, it was often downright unpleasant. While the ruling class may have enjoyed certain luxuries, such as wine and occasional hot baths, the lack of basic amenities such as plumbing made living conditions in castles less than ideal.

Furthermore, the prevalence of rats and other vermin added to the discomfort of those who called castles home. That’s not to mention the awful smells, constant kitchen fires and the overcrowding. So, what was life really like in a medieval castle?
