The Untersberg is a great mountain straddling the Austro-German border opposite Salzburg. It was reputed in local legend to be the seat of the god Wotan and to be haunted. The Knights Templar of the region had their headquarters in Vienna and before the year 1222 never had a Komturei (a command post) near the mountain. The commander of a "section" returning from the crusades to Austria in 1220 received an apparition believed to be of the demi-goddess Isais at Nineveh, old Babylon, who instructed him to proceed to the Untersberg and erect a temple in her honor inside it.
