Neanderthals probably were infected with diseases they had no immunity to and succumbed as a result. It wouldn't be the first or the last time this would happen when strangers move into a new territory.

I always thought the disappearance of the Neanderthals was the first true genocide otherwise they'd still be here beside us, two sub-species of human living together. As a white man I can say I suspect it was the early white man who wiped them out.

“Since Hilprecht’s discovery, at least 18 other exemplars of the king’s list have been found, most of them dating from the second half of the Isin dynasty (c. 2017-1794 BCE.).  No two of these documents are identical.”

Having different opinions about History: Sumerians were doing it wrong.

"Knowledge is a matter of fact" - like manmade climate change? Who's facts? Such arrogance is amazing. Enjoy your leeches. . . Science today is nothing more than a tool for political expediency. You like facts? Most of the most brilliant, honest, and world changing scientists were in fact Christians. Darwin messed everything up and the quasi scientist jumped on the bandwagon claiming it as fact. All the while ignoring what Crick proved (evolution only works in reverse). Nothing is added to the existing subject, only removed (the wings lost when not needed, but already written into the DNA) - that is NOT evolution!

Nephilim - "Men of old". Angels who came to earth and mated with human women, resulting in greater evil on the earth - pre-flood. We have known about them for thousands of years. . . But hey, what do we Christians know. . . Soon all knees will bow to the king who's kingdom is no part of this world, and all glory will be given to the creator - יהוה - pronounced "Yod, He, Waw and He" Ancient Hebrew has no vowels - YHWH or JHVH and articulated as Yahweh or Jehovah.

Hi. You need to rescale your stated dimensions. Other sources quote these objects as having the largest measurement at 146 MILLImetres, which is 14.6 CENTImetres. You interpretation has multiplied that by 10. I did wonder while I was reading this article, just how they fitted the things into the grave with the child if they were as big as your measurements claim. ;-)

I note the placings of two of the objects, although the size of each in relation to its placing is not given. Also, it would be interesting to find out what was the placing of the third object, along with its dimensions, because I think these objects might have something to do with recording the child's education:

    Stone behind the head could maybe mean that whatever is recorded on that object is what he has already learned;
Stone behind the hips maybe to do with what he was learning at the time of his death?

Where, in relation to the body, was the third object? Is there any information available on that? If it was at his feet, could that be representing the way he was being guided, with lessons to be learned?

Grave goods were for use in the afterlife, so could the stones be a record for some ethereal guardian who would take the boy's spirit into care? A bit like a would-be apprentice taking samples to show his potential Master? These ancient peoples were big on stone calendarising, so these could well be a stone-age diary and calendar arrangement. (Depending on the placement of that third stone, as I said.)

As the archaeologist was a 19th century amateur, I suppose it's too much to hope that he bothered to draw the positioning of the grave contents?

Hi Nola. These are good questions. I just took their word for it when they said they are solid chalk. I assume they have a way to know if they are solid. I did not interview the researchers for this article.

    Thanks for writing.

I looked at what they are calling solid chalk drums, and the statement that they had no idea what they actually were. While there is only one photograph of the "drum" they also indicate some are approximately 4 feet which is quite large to not have a significant use or purpose. To my eye, it looks as though the top section is actually a "once removable" lid, and you can actually see what looks like a joining seam. Have they used our modern technology to x-ray and examine the interior of these drums?(so as not to damage). If buried along with an individual 5,000 years ago, knowing human nature, it is highly unlikely they are simply solid and carved. My instinct says...check inside for something that person would have valued. Like a funeral urn...of ashes, or a treasure box of favourite things....or beloved pets, or even "the deceased"...children.
September 7, they just revealed the discovery of the massive "Super Henge" using ground penetration devices, a discovery that will require rewriting beliefs about ancient archaeology...yet again.
Surely they could xray the drums. The chalk may not have just been carved on the outside surface, but may also be a form of container. Do you know if they have x-rayed?

Been awhile since my Mayan studies at PSU, but I think it is instead of arrow heads you're actually speaking of atlatl points. There just isn't much in the way of evidence (archeological) to support that the Mayans and Aztecs ever developed the bow and arrow. Evidence does exist to support the use of atlatl darts in Central America though.

I have always thought that we were very arrogant to suggest that Neanderthals were less advanced or less intelligent than our ‘Primitive’ ( I use the word ‘Primitive’ to mean ‘Earliest or First’) modern human ancestors.

Kinda surprised they were not described as having high powered automatic assault metal detectors. Seems a bit sensational. The problem is not the metal detectors or the strength of them but rather that people want to loot artifacts.

"England and Wales are unusual in that metal detecting is legal"

In the USA, it is legal but of course we have our own regulations. It seems to me there should be a balance between individual rights and the authoritarian imposition of unelected and unaccountable gatekeepers dictating to society how land is used and history appreciated.

To come to that conclusion you ignore the fact that the reports of discoveries of giant skeletons also noted other anomalous features of said skeletons; such as elongated crania or double dentition, for example. This makes it unlikely to be merely gigantism.

Also, the reports clearly state that the giant skeletons were most often found not in the mounds with the rest of the normal skeletons, but below the mounds, in their own separate grave or tomb beneath the ground level. At the very least this implies that the giant skeletons were almost exclusively from the oldest era of mound builder culture. If they were merely representative of the normal occurrence of gigantism in any population, why weren't the giant skeletons evenly distributed throughout mound layers?

It seems to me not beyond possibility that the giants had nothing to do with the mound builders for the most part, and that the latter constructed their burial mounds atop the tombs of the former whenever they found them. The tombs of the giants may have already been ancient when the mound builders found them.
