Well, if the possibility of "little people" is in doubt, the presence of a tribe of extremely diminutive humans was recorded in Australia as recently as the late 1800s. There are even some photographs of them. I remember seeing one with an Englishman standing next to one of the little guys, who was somewhere around three feet tall I'd guess. He was proportioned normally otherwise; if the English guy hadn't been standing next to him I wouldn't have known the dude was so small.
