Dolmens of the Caucasus

The Mysterious Dolmens of the Caucasus

(Read the article on one page)

The Western Caucasus, extending over 275,000 ha of the extreme western end of the Caucasus mountains and located 50 km north-east of the Black Sea, is one of the few large mountain areas of Europe that has not experienced significant human impact. Yet dotted within the pristine landscape are thousands of ancient megalithic structures built many millennia ago. Archaeologists do not know who built them, where the stones came from, or what their true purpose was, leading to much speculation in the scientific community.

The Russians call the megalithic structures dolmens, which means ‘portal tomb’, but despite the name, there is no solid evidence that their original purpose was for burial. Archaeologists put their age at 4000 to 6,000 years old, based on pottery found in the vicinity of the dolmens, as well as human remains, but there is no way to prove whether these were put there much later.

While there are tens of thousands of known dolmens throughout the world, particularly throughout Europe, the Caucasian dolmens represent a unique type of prehistoric architecture, built with precisely dressed cyclopic stone blocks. The stones were, for example, shaped into 90-degree angles, to be used as corners, and all of them are punctuated with a portal in the centre of the facade. While round holes are the most common, square ones have also been found. Stone plugs have been found at almost every tomb, and were used to block the portal at the front.

In front of the facade is a court that usually extends out, creating an area where rituals are believed to have taken place. The court is usually outlined by large stone walls, sometimes over a meter high. It is in this area that Bronze and Iron Age pottery has been found, along with human remains, bronze tools, and ornaments made from silver, gold, or precious stones.

Approximately 3,000 of these megalithic monuments are known in the Western Caucasus, but more are constantly being found. The average weight of each structure is from 15 to 30 tons, yet there is not even the slightest trace of a quarry in the Western Caucasus, nor have any paths been found with evidence of heavy loads having been brought to the build site. The construction itself is also awe-inspiring. Within most of the dolmens, the huge stone plates join each other precisely with specially made grooves.  The joint places are so close in places that it is impossible to even slide a knife blade between the plates. In 2007, it was decided to reconstruct a dolmen from the stones plates of destroyed structures in Gelendzhik and carry out the processing and fitting with high-precision electric tools. Despite the help of modern technology, the builders were unable to achieve the same level of precision as the Bronze Age builders.

So, who were these people who achieved such precision in construction? According to the Vladimir Markovin, an archaeologist who has devoted much of his life to studying the Caucasian dolmens, the people of the time lived in mud huts, had no knowledge of iron or the pottery wheel, and cultivated land with hoes. Yet they still had constructions, whose design is impressive, even by modern standards.

Many locals will tell you the legend of the dwarves who once settled in the area; people who were so tiny that they used hares for riding. And, just like in fairy tales, they lived alongside giants who built stone dwellings for their feeble neighbours so that they could take shelter in bad weather. However, the giants were not repaid for their kindness. In order to tame the giants, the little people blinded them and gave them mind-altering herbs. The giants began to lose their minds and unleashed war and carnage, resulting in mass extinction of both the dwarves and the giants, with only the stone houses remaining.

Archaeologists have put forward two main hypotheses regarding the purpose of the dolmens.  The first is that they were places of tribal worship. The second is that they were burial places. During the excavation, many of them contained burial sites of people who had lived during different historical periods, and next to them were various items that indicate belief in an afterlife. However, many researchers argue that the burials constitute secondary use and were not the original reason for their construction.

These structures are fascinating. However, to refer to such dilapidated structures as having been built with such a level of precision that they can't be matched by modern means is just silly. Sure, some may have clean edges--which is hardly a feat--and the one in the last photo looks like it was "cut" with a sledge hammer.

This whole "can't be matched by modern methods" is threadbare and lame and always untrue.

Tsurugi's picture

"Can't be matched with modern methods" does not mean it's impossible to do. It just means that in order to do it, a unique method has to be invented.

Think of one of those rock-cut temples, clinging precariously to the side of a cliff high in the mountains, with a narrow, treacherous footpath as the only access. That temple is a perfect example of a structure that could not be matched with modern methods....because modern methods include a lot of heavy equipment, which requires big, wide roads to get to the site, plus a staging platform on-site.
But there is no staging platform, and the only "road" is the footpath.

So we could replicate the temple structure, yes. But it wouldn't be the same, because when we were done there would be this huge road going up the mountain and this massive artificially flattened area where we parked all our equipment.

Could we do it with only a footpath? Probably, but it would be a unique process invented specifically for that project.

You refer to the dolmens as "dilapidated structures" lol. Perhaps you didn't notice the date of 4-6k years?
Speaking of "can't be matched with modern methods", there isn't a single modern surface structure that would still be standing after 4k years, much less retain its shape and form enough to be disparagingly labeled as a dilapidated structure.

Most all ancient construction was done by, 'small steps'. We like more modern day to do some like that as well, but we also today believe in something the ancients could not, 'leaps and bounds'.. And our science actually has this as a function. Leap and bound in ancient times, did not exist.. Perhaps the Leap and bound, tool; began with the greeks, ? OR there was a renaissance period, many centuries before the one we acknowledge today.. But when did that ancient renaissance begin and how long did that last ?Because it does seem, it was, lost to history also..
Additionally, who was the first out of the ancient box thinker who began that first renaissance. ? Please reply, beyond curious here :)

There is an alternative point of view on the purpose of the dolmens. It has been descirbed originally in "The Ringing Cedars of Russia" book series. There are also some interesting tips on this matter in my article -

Precision fit stones and even megaliths are not rare but rather usual in ancient times.
The most amazing of these precision fitted megaliths are in Tiwanaku and in Pumapunku in Bolivia close to the Lake Titicaca,

Alex, saw your comment :) want to search your megaliths in Bolivia. should be a good learn.

Dolmen is an Ancient Bulgarian word meaning Man Given. Apparently dolmen were built in such a way so they can give something to men. In my view domem were used for geomagnetic energy recharging of human bodies and minds.

If you are interested in dolmens please visit this site: - you will find enormous amount of info, pictures and videos about dolmens and other sacred places of Russia

Dolmens are a clue to exactly the same thing that pyramids are. They are very closely related and they both reveal the truth about our past. Think massive population, enormous demand for food, and multiple levels with the agriculture on the surface.

These structures are intruiging to say the least. I've thought that perhaps the dolman was to protect children. While the main group was away hunting/gathering/etc., a few teens would be left to watch toddlers and babies, who could enter and hide in the structure which looks to be wild animal proof, until help came back. The little courtyard in front would keep them close by and easier to watch over.

Please enjoy the recent photos from Vedic Russia quest in June 2016

Could it be that the use for these is being over thought? Could it be that the use for these were just simply for long term Food Storage?

The construction of these Dolmens would make them impervious to Animals as small as Mice to as large as a Bear. The Mass of these large heavy stones would also create a natural environment for a fairly stable and consistent temperature like a Refrigerator in both Winter and Summer.

Well they aren't places of worship or burial tombs, although perhaps they were used as tombs by others much later on. The answer to the Dolmen mystery was given in the article, why confuse the issue. I have absolutely no problem accepting folklore, why would they lie, I mean legends and folklore have been found to be accurate time and time again. Did not people regard the Lost City of Troy nothing but a myth until the lost was recently found. So really there's no honor in dismissing myths and in so doing being disrespectful to countless generation who just were passing on knowledge about what happened long ago..

On a chilly winter day in 1929, Halil Edhem, the Director of Turkey's National Museum, was hunched over his solitary task of classifying documents. He pulled towards him a map drawn on Roe deer skin. As Halil opened the chart to its full dimensions (two feet by three feet wide or 60 X 90 cm) he was surprised by how much of the New World was depicted on a map which dated from 1513.
