While fiction is frowned on in academic circles, Jean Auel seems to say that Neanderthals were not that good at innovation, so despite their gestalt memory base, their long term survival in the face of Cro Magnons lay only in hybridisation.

I have seen little or nothing to contradict this, so I'm happy to accept this as one of the hypotheses until a better one comes along.
