The National Museum in Copenhagen announced on Sunday that 54-year-old Frants Fugl Vestergaard from Denmark unearthed a rare gold earring while metal detecting in a field in West Jutland. Believed to be an 11th century gift from the Emperor of Byzantium to a Viking chief, the earring is built around a crescent-shaped gold plate. Inlaid with enamel in a frame of golden threads, the gold earring is decorated with small gold balls and gold bands.

All eyes focused on the figure of Rangda as she emerged from the inner part of the temple, about a third of the way through the Barong dance (an ancient dance which predates even the Hindu influences in the island of Bali, Indonesia). There is no doubt that Rangda embodies power - she is electrifying, dangerous, and otherworldly. She has protruding eyes, pendulous, large breasts and a long, red tongue hanging down her body.

The National Museum in Quito, Ecuador exhibits an otherworldly collection of sheet-gold masks representing the Andean sun god Inti. Zig-zag rays of golden light burst from his face and some end in tiny stylized human figures, animals and insects. Most Inti masks were crafted by the La Tolita culture which extended along the coast from the Esmeralda area of Ecuador to the Tumaco Region in Colombia between 300 BC and 400 AD. However, a sun-burst Inti mask was discovered 2000 miles south in Cusco.
