Two teenagers in Kansas City have stumbled upon the skull and tooth of a woman that is many centuries old.  The discovery of the skull was initially believed to be that of a homicide victim, particularly since it was found with a puncture on the top of the skull, like that caused by a bullet.

However, forensic anthropologists have identified the skull as having belonged to a mongoloid female of a historic or prehistoric era.  The tooth also shows signs of wear that is consistent with earlier human populations of American Indian origin.

State officials will send a report to the American Indian tribes of the area and will hold onto the remains until one of the tribes formally requests possession of it.
