For centuries, seekers of lost civilizations have gazed across the Atlantic in search of Atlantis, the mysterious land described by Plato as an advanced society destroyed in a great cataclysm. Egypt, the Mediterranean, and  the mid-Atlantic ridge (1) have been proposed as its resting place.

But what if part of the legacy of Atlantis survived — not only beneath the sea, but deep in the jungles of Central America?

Guatemala, with its monumental Maya cities, mythic traditions, and sacred temple complexes, may hold echoes of a forgotten world. Recent archaeological discoveries, combined with mythological parallels, suggest that the ancient Maya preserved fragments of a much older memory: one that resonates strongly with Plato’s account of Atlantis.

Myths of Cataclysm and Rebirth

Plato’s account in the Timaeus and Critias (2) describes Atlantis as a powerful civilization that fell due to its own hubris, swallowed by floods and earthquakes. Solon learning from the priest Sonchis at the Temple of Neith in Sais, Egypt (now flooded) provide us with many interesting references to Atlantis.

They describe intense earthquakes followed by huge tsunami waves that even destroyed part of the Acropolis, which as mentioned, was far larger in pre-cataclysmic times than it appears today. There is also mention of Phaethon—the son of the Sun- who on his carriage lost his way and fell onto the earth. This could, in fact, symbolize a solar flare, a hypothesis supported by Dr. Robert Schoch (3) and other notable scientists.

Another possibility is this could describe a comet impact. Scientific proof of such an event has been found in the form of a nano-diamond rich layer (4) in Central America and parts of Europe. When one begins to piece all of this together, it becomes clear that this is not merely a fairytale or an invention of Plato’s imagination. Even the date presented by Plato is 9.600 BC for the cataclysm and destruction of Atlantis, which coincides with the Younger Dryas hypothesis (5).
