Treasure hunters have struck gold once again off Florida's coast, recovering over 1,000 silver and gold coins valued at approximately $1 million from an 18th-century Spanish shipwreck. The extraordinary find was announced by 1715 Fleet Queens Jewels, LLC, the licensed salvage company holding exclusive rights to the legendary 1715 treasure fleet sites.

Historic Discovery Along Treasure Coast

The recovery took place in July 2025 off the southeastern coast of Florida, an area aptly nicknamed the Treasure Coast due to the numerous Spanish shipwrecks scattered along its waters. According to Sal Guttuso, the company's director of operations, the coins were found concentrated in a specific area deep beneath the sand, suggesting they once belonged to a single container that spilled when the ship broke apart during the catastrophic hurricane of 1715.

"This discovery is not only about the treasure itself, but the stories it tells," Guttuso explained in the company's news release.

"Each coin is a piece of history, a tangible link to the people who lived, worked, and sailed during the Golden Age of the Spanish Empire."

The Fateful 1715 Fleet Disaster

The recovered coins represent fragments of a much larger tragedy that occurred on July 31, 1715. The 1715 Treasure Fleet consisted of eleven Spanish ships carrying an estimated $400 million worth of gold, silver, and jewels from the New World back to Spain. A devastating hurricane struck the fleet just seven days after departing Havana, Cuba, sinking all vessels along Florida's east coast and claiming approximately 1,500 lives.

The newly discovered coins, known as "pieces of eight" or reales, were minted in Spanish colonial territories including Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia. Many retain visible dates and mint marks, making them invaluable to historians and collectors studying Spain's colonial economic system. Guttuso noted that some coins even bear impressions from burlap sacks, providing clues about their original packaging and storage methods.

Royal Seal Adds Historical Significance

Among the treasures, archaeologists discovered a royal lead seal bearing the impression of Philip II of Spain, who ruled during the mid-to-late 1500s. Guttuso believes this artifact likely secured an important document granting land titles or positions to Spanish colonial families, representing a tangible connection to the administrative systems of Spain's vast American empire.

The salvage company plans to carefully conserve the recovered artifacts before displaying select pieces at local museums. This approach ensures future generations can appreciate both the historical significance and maritime archaeology methods used to recover these priceless relics from centuries beneath the waves.
