Ancient Zagora - Andros

In search of the Lost City of Zagora

Print

During the times of Homer, Zagora, a city on the island of Andros was the most powerful city during the Iron Age.  However, the city was abandoned and disappeared without a trace. Now a team of archaeologists from Australia are trying to find out why during new archaeological excavations that will start in a few days on the island of Andros.

The island of Andros was named after the first person that discovered it. According to mythology, Andros had a divine origin and his father was the son of god Apollo. According to the archaeological discoveries so far the history of the island goes back to the Mycenean period of around 1500 BC. The island was one of the largest commercial and financial centres of the known world. On the island during those times the most powerful city was Zagora.

The first archaeological dig in the area started in the 60s and 70s but the excavations didn’t produce any results regarding why the city was suddenly abandoned. But today, with the help of satellite images, ground penetrating radar and other cutting-edge technology, archaeologists believe that they are going to find the answers.

Excavations at the site last year resulted in the discovery of many domestic dwellings, and evidence of metal workings and farming. In the months to follow and with the help of technology we may get the answers related to the mysterious disappearance of Zagora.
