New research suggests that the two large structures near the Red Pyramid site at Dahshur, Egypt, are parts of an ancient dam, not stone transport ramps, which is what was previously believed. This indicates that they could be evidence for the use of a complex water management engineering technology, which is about 4,500 years old and was used for constructing one of the world’s greatest ancient monuments.
The team of researchers led by Xavier Landreau of the CEA Paleotechnic Institute employed satellite images, old maps, and digital elevation models for the study, which indicated that these structures were constructed during the reign of Pharaoh Sneferu, around 2550 BC. They extend between 600 and 700 meters across the valley, and rather than serving as quarry roads, the researchers argue they display the engineering characteristics of dams designed to retain water, trap sediment, and regulate seasonal floods.

A Sophisticated Two-Stage Hydraulic System
According to this study authors, the eastern dam was most probably the main water-retaining dam while the western dam was presumably a secondary dam. The western dam has been designed in such a manner that its effluent channel is a weir called a ‘duckbill’ spillway, a three-sided effluent chute that can handle large volumes of water without causing any problem. This construction would have lowered the chances for major dam failure during flood episodes and would have therefore signified a major breakthrough in engineering during the Old Kingdom.

The space between the two dams, covering approximately 8.5 hectares, would have acted as an intermediate basin to temporarily hold water and decrease its force. Hydrological modeling indicates that Wadi Dahshur was connected to western tributaries of Wadi Taflah, potentially giving the system access to a catchment area of up to 400 square kilometers. This connection could have captured short but violent flash floods, turning a natural hazard into a controlled resource in an era when the climate was wetter than it is today.

Water's Role in Pyramid Construction
The most intriguing aspect of the discovery is a diversion channel running parallel to the west face of the Red Pyramid, the world's first successfully completed smooth-sided pyramid. The researchers suggest this channel may have directed water to areas where it was needed for construction activities. While it would not have allowed boats to sail directly from the Nile, the controlled water supply could have assisted in moving heavy cargo on barges or water-assisted sleds across the plateau.
The water could also have been used to supply construction workers and animals, support mortar preparation, and reduce dust. This theory aligns with growing evidence that ancient Egyptian engineers harnessed hydraulic technology to support their monumental building projects, challenging the traditional view that relied solely on immense manual labor and earthen ramps.
Learning from Past Engineering Failures
The construction of the Dahshur Dams might indicate that trial and error occurred within the engineering history of ancient Egypt. Less than 20 kilometers away is Sadd el-Kafara, the oldest large dam in the world that collapsed due to flooding. The researchers believe that the development of the advancing duckbill spillway system at Dahshur resulted from the earlier construction catastrophe. Therefore, this indicates that the Egyptians were continuing to improve flood control strategies through various forms of experimentation.
Although the Dahshur Dams remain unexcavated and their exact dating has yet to be confirmed, because of the convergence of their geomorphological features and the hydraulic modeling geared to support its original interpretation as the work of man through hydraulic technology, it appears evident that future archeological work may reveal some incredible historical facts hidden deep within the sands of time.
