The result of this restoration project was recently presented at the Palestra Grande of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, completing the International Workshop on Research and Ongoing Excavation. As stated by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the archaeologists and conservators have reconstructed over 25 percent of the original fresco. The fragments were obtained from the precise location of where they fell, and therefore it was possible for the experts to reconstruct the original fresco with a high degree of confidence.

Innovative Modular Restoration
Unlike traditional flat panels used in similar restorations, the team in Pompeii developed a highly innovative, curved modular support structure. This new system was designed in tandem with the restoration work, as the progressive reassembly of the plaster fragments was the only way to accurately define the original curvature of the ancient vault.

This adaptable framework not only restores the three-dimensional spatiality of the decorative ceiling but also ensures the conservation of the delicate fragments. Crucially, the modular nature of the support means the restoration is an open, ongoing process. As Archaeology Magazine notes, numerous fragments remain in storage, and future excavations in the House with Bakery may yield more pieces. The current structure allows these newly identified fragments to be seamlessly integrated over time without disturbing the already completed work.
The Pompeiian conservators and archaeologists created an innovative curved modular structure as opposed to the traditional flat surfaces often used for reconstruction. The curved modular system was developed during the restoration as it enabled the individuals to assemble the plaster pieces correctly according to the original curvature of the ancient vault. The use of the modular restoration system allows for three-dimensional restoration and protection of the fragile pieces of plaster. As Archaeology Magazine notes, numerous fragments remain in storage, and future excavations in the House with Bakery may yield more pieces. The modular system is open-ended, meaning that the new pieces can be added seamlessly without disturbing the completed work.

The Sacred Union of Dionysus and Ariadne
The reconstructed section of the ceiling reveals a highly refined and complex figurative program. The vibrant polychrome decoration features a large central panel surrounded by aediculae, intricate borders, lush vegetal garlands, allegorical figures of the seasons, and winged genii. The high artistic quality of the fresco points to the skill of the ancient workshop that decorated this upper-floor dining room, or cenaculum.
The central theme of the fresco is the hierogamy, or sacred marriage, between the god of wine and revelry, Dionysus, and the Cretan princess Ariadne. Although the central scene is only partially preserved, comparisons with similar ancient artworks allowed researchers to identify the iconic motif. Dionysus is depicted reclining on a chariot, facing Ariadne who plays a harp, accompanied by a lyre-playing erote. The chariot is notably drawn by two centaurs playing musical instruments.
This central mythological scene is reinforced by numerous Dionysian references distributed throughout the surrounding decoration. Ritual symbols of the cult of Dionysus, theatrical masks, and vessels used for libations are woven into the garlands of fruit and flowers, celebrating the divine couple.

A Wider Focus on Dionysian Cults
The restoration of this magnificent ceiling is part of a broader research initiative by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, which has chosen the theme of Dionysus as the focal point for its 2026 cultural and scientific activities. This thematic focus was inspired by significant recent discoveries, including a massive megalography depicting a Dionysian procession found in the nearby House of the Thiasos, also located in Regio IX.
Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, highlighted the importance of this work, stating:
"Italy is a world leader in archaeological restoration, and Pompeii, with its team of conservators, is a central part of that. That is why we are happy to share the results of our conservation projects with the whole world, as these projects are always opportunities for research and exchange," as reported by Finestre sull'Arte.
The House with Bakery, which belonged to a wealthy Pompeian magistrate named Aulus Rustius Verus, has been the site of several major discoveries. Previous excavations revealed a harsh bakery-prison area, providing a stark contrast to the luxurious banquet hall above. The ongoing restoration of the Dionysus and Ariadne ceiling not only resurrects a lost masterpiece of Roman art but also deepens our understanding of the complex social and religious life in ancient Pompeii.
