Stephen Hawking, Mankind Survival in Space

Hawking Claims Mankind Must Leave Earth to Survive

Print

According to British physicist, Stephen Hawking, human beings will need to go out into space and find habitation on another planet in order to survive, and has called on scientists to embark on further exploration of space to guarantee the future of mankind.

According to Hawking, who spoke at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, "we won't survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet."

Hawking is concerned that space exploration has suffered a number of cut-backs as a result of the global financial crisis. In particular NASA's planetary science budget, which is crucial to finding habitable planets, was slashed by $300 million this year.

However, significant progress continues to be made, in particular the landing of the Mars Curiosity Rover, which continues to make remarkable advancements in our understanding of the planet, and there now exists what has been called the ‘Mars race’ to attempt the first manned mission within the next decade.. In 2010 and 2011, the Mars-500 experiment was carried out in Moscow: a group of six volunteers were locked inside a simulated spacecraft for 520 days – the time it would take to make a round trip to the planet.

I read in "CONVERSATION WITH ALIENS" about aliens saying they would not allow us to settle on other planets!

He's right....but he's also wrong, sorta. (IMO)

He is right that we have got to get off this planet for the human race to survive. Meaning, we need to form viable, self-sufficient and self-sustaining colonies off-planet. As many as possible, wherever possible, as soon as possible.
Even a cursory glance at the geology of earth clearly demonstrates that this planet of ours has undergone multiple cataclysmic events of almost unimaginable power and violence. It will happen again. It's only a matter of time. If we want to avoid extinction, we need to spread out, so that one cataclysm can't wipe us out.

So he's right about that.

I just disagree that the answer is government space programs. Free enterprise will get us into space way faster, and more efficiently. I love NASA, but it has a big problem...namely, the federal bureaucracy that sits on top of it.
