Hierapolis - Gate to Hell

A gate to the ‘Underworld’ found in Turkey

In the ancient ruins of Hierapolis in Turkey, archaeologists have discovered an ancient ‘Gate to the Underworld’. In ancient Greek and Roman Mythology, there were many different places on Earth where someone could go to the Underworld – and many demi-gods and heroes are said to have done so.

One of those, Pluto’s gate, appears in the texts of the Greek geographer Strabon. Based on those references archaeologists have been searching for the Gate at Hierapolis since 1957. And it looks that they have finally found it.

A Gate of Pluto or Plutonion can be explained by the Geologists as a natural phenomenon where an opening (like a cave) in the Earth’s crust allows poisonous gasses to escape into the air.
