Neolithic House

Archaeologists Unearth 12,000 Year Old Settlement in Berkshire

Print

Since 2003 a team from Wessex Archaeology has been investigating a large area at Horton in Berkshire which was used as a settlement for people before the last Ice age (Approximately 12,000 years ago).

In that area, four old Neolithic houses dating back 6,000 years have been also discovered, making them the oldest houses in Britain. The dating of the houses was done using the carbon dating method on organic matter found around the site (remains of food). They have also found tools, pottery, arrow heads and stone grinders.

The discovery of the houses shows that people in the area probably possessed knowledge of timber construction techniques. Excavations continue and more of the settlement will soon be unearthed.
