Durg district of Chhattisgarh

2500 year-old Ancient City Discovered in India

Print

It all started in 2008 when the J R Bhagat, Deputy Director of the Archaeology Department, Chhattisgarh, found some old items (coins, pottery and bones) close to the Kharun River, indicating the presence of an ancient city. It was then when he got the permission from the Archaeological Survey of India to proceed with excavations.

The first results of the excavations at the Durg district of Chhattisgarh have shown that the city is of about the second or third century BC and it looks like an organized settlement. They have found that the area is divided in blocks with a main road and about six to eight rooms on both sides.

A large number of ceramic items were found as well as small statues and other artefacts. And according to Bhagat, the city may have been destroyed by fire.
