The Athabasca Falls is impressive. But this waterfall is not noted for the usual reasons of height or width, it is recognized for its strength. The powerful flow is due to the sheer quantity of water that plunges into the awaiting gorge. It is said that even when the river is low, the falls propels an immense flow over the quartzite and limestone. The strength of the falls can be witnessed in the way it has carved out a space through the gorge and the large number of potholes it has left as signs of what nature can accomplish. But, much like other natural beings, this falls has a somewhat softer side as well. Imagine the sight of this natural wonder when the winter freezes the powerhouse to a crawl. This completely changes the Athabasca Falls from a force of raging water to a beautiful and serene location filled with stunning ice formations...but the spring soon returns the Falls to its impressive alter-ego yet again, and the cycle continues.
