The Middle Ages spanned from the 5th to the 15th century, during which the majority of the population lived in rural areas and worked as farmers. While life during this time was vastly different from our modern-day conveniences, it was a time of ingenuity and resourcefulness. One such aspect of daily life was lighting homes. In a time without electricity, how did medieval peasants light their homes? From tallow candles and rush lights to oil lamps, a variety of methods were employed. Exploring these methods sheds light on the ingenuity of our medieval ancestors and the challenges they faced.
