The Man Keeping an Ancient Craft Alive in Gambia (Video)

Print

In Gambia, Musa Jaiteh is keeping an ancient craft alive by using traditional techniques to create vibrant tie-dyed fabrics with natural dyes made from kola nuts and indigo leaves. While many artisans have switched to imported chemical dyes for ease and speed, Musa believes the natural dyes produce a richer and longer-lasting color.

Musa's process involves crushing the kola nuts by hand, soaking the pulp in water to release the pigment, and using an ancient tying method to create intricate patterns. He also uses a stamping technique called batik to block the dye in specific spots. Musa's family has been using indigo to make textiles for at least four generations, and he hopes to pass on the skill like his ancestors did. While chemical dyes may be more convenient, Musa believes that his traditional approach is worth the risk to keep this beautiful craft alive.
