The science of archaeoacoustics reveals that some prehistoric barrows were potentially used for frightening and mysterious rites. Surrounded by decomposing bodies, initiates may have been exposed to infrasound - inaudibly low frequencies known to affect brainwaves, producing hallucinations and altered states of consciousness.
