Who would believe that we would reach the point where volunteer astronauts would be required for a one-way trip to colonize Mars?

A non-profit organization called Mars One plans to create a global reality TV event that is related to the colonization of Mars. An event that is estimated to cost about 6 billion dollars. Co-founder Bas Lansdorp calculates that most of the cost of the one-way trip will be covered from broadcasting rights revenues and sponsorships.

The astronaut selection process will be a reality TV show from which the profits will be used for funding the mission. If you are adult, intelligent, creative, and adaptable as well as a few other things that you can read here, then get ready to apply once the application process begins. You will be trained to become an astronaut, so do not worry if you are not one already.

Multiple astronaut groups of four will be trained and according to skills will be sent with each group. Mars One clarifies the importance of the chemistry between the members of each group, skills and abilities.

The astronaut selection will go through four stages. The first stage will involve the online application which will also include a one minute video answering questions and explaining your interest in the mission (it will be a TV show after all, a video couldn’t be missed!)

Stage 2 will include medical tests and interviews with the selection committee. Stage 3 will be a national selection round, where the candidates will participate in challenges and the audience as well as the committee will select who will be the first ones.

And the final Stage 4, perfecting the English language for international candidates and demonstration of living in harsh conditions and working under difficult circumstances is to be tested. A total of six groups of four candidates will become full time employees of the Mars One Corporation and will start training for their mission.

Exiting news isn’t it? I just hope that at the end of the TV reality show of the selection they won’t say that the mission is cancelled …
