Shrinking Brain in Humans

Scientists are alarmed by shrinking of the human brain

(Read the article on one page)

A study published earlier this year confirmed what scientists have long believed to be the case – the human brain is shrinking.  For more than 7 million years the hominid brain has grown increasingly bigger, almost tripling in size.  But for the last 10,000 years, the human brain has been shrinking at an alarming rate and no one really knows why. New research has attempted to answer this question by examining size changes in specific regions of the brain.

The study published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology was carried out by a team of Chinese researchers who looked at over 500 endocasts from the past 7,000 years. Endocasts are moulds of brains created from the imprints on the inside of the skull. They are an invaluable resource when studying human evolution, allowing us to track how our brain has evolved over the past few million years.  The results confirmed what has long been suspected – our brains are getting smaller.

It was in 2010 when researching a skull that belonged to a Cro Magnon man that scientists first discovered the brain of our ancient ancestor was significantly larger than humans today. This has been replicated time and again and it can now be said that the human brain has decreased from 1,500 cubic centimetres (cc) to 1,350cc, irrespective of gender and race.  If we continue on this path, we will end up having the same-sized brain as Homo Erectus, an ancient human species which had a brain of 1,100 cc.

Does a smaller brain mean less intelligence?

Scientists have been debating for many years about whether a smaller brain means less intelligence, and no agreement has been reached.  To clarify, it is not simply the size of the brain that is relevant here, but the size of the brain in relation to body size, referred to as the Encephalization Quotient (EQ).  Research has found a close relationship between intelligence and EQ.

Over millions of years, the hominid body has been shrinking but the worrying fact is that our brains are shrinking faster than our bodies. Does this mean human beings are getting dumber, or are smaller brains not necessarily bad?

Many scientists have argued that bigger doesn’t always mean better.  Duke University anthropologist Brian Hare says "the decrease in brain size is actually an evolutionary advantage" because it could indicate we're evolving into a less aggressive animal. For example, the common chimpanzees have bigger brains than bonobos, but they are less likely to resolve issues through teamwork because they're more aggressive.

Other proponents of the ‘bigger isn’t better’ hypothesis have argued that our ancestors had a larger visual cortex because good vision was necessary for survival. But as social support increased, vision became less important. Those with smaller visual cortexes had more resources available for social regions of the brain, thus increasing chances of survival.

However, the findings of the new study conducted in China are not consistent with these theories because the results indicated that it was not one particular area of the brain that was shrinking – the whole brain has been getting smaller. If the hypothesis about the visual cortex was correct, we should see shrinkage only in that region of the brain.

The one exception is the frontal lobe, which actually seems to be increasing in size. The frontal lobe is the region of the brain responsible for speaking, comprehending the speech of others, reading and writing. It is possible that we are doing a lot more of that now – at least the reading and writing part – compared to our ancient past.

While plenty of hypotheses have been put forward to justify the shrinking of the human brain, there remain many who are less optimistic. The authors of a study published in 2012 maintained that humans lost the evolutionary pressure to be smart once they formed agricultural settlements.

"A hunter-gatherer who did not correctly conceive a solution to providing food or shelter probably died, along with his/her progeny, whereas a modern Wall Street executive that made a similar conceptual mistake would receive a substantial bonus and be a more attractive mate. Clearly, extreme selection is a thing of the past," the researchers wrote in the journal article published in the journal Trends in Genetics.

More than 4,000 years ago, great civilizations existed around the world and the ancient inhabitants built incredible buildings and cities with great precision and beauty, often with astronomical alignments that we are only just beginning to realise. Nowadays, technology has taken over, rendering our need to apply skill, creativity, and memory virtually redundant. Instead of memorising navigational routes we switch on our ‘sat navs’ and rather than storing phone numbers and addresses in our memory banks, we have them all to hand on our iPhones and Blackberries.  Our technology is evolving rapidly, but sadly it seems that we are not.

no dummies.. our brain got smaller when the ancient aliens got involved with us a while back and gave us a dna tweak. Making us smarter with less space.

Like we do all the time to computer chips.

The smaller brain = less intelligence hypothesis has just been proven. Thanks Timothy, now I can spend my kids college fund.

I sincerely hope that Timothy Guy's comment was intended to be ironic. If not, it serves as an example of the article's thesis.

Criticism aside, there is no loss of genetic information in adaptation, merely activation and inactivation of useful genes. When we need to be smarter to deal with ultra-hostile environmental conditions on an individual basis, you can expect to see our brains become larger over generations.

BRIAN R - couldn't agree more.

Nice one

Simply said, we need to be less intelligent the more we move out of natural clans groups and tribes to mega societies. Mega societies require mostly the ability to follow, obey and make gains, hence the increase in gray matter needed for for speaking, comprehending the speech of others, reading and writing. The full range of human functionality, the ability to feel compassion, abstract affection, responsibility, loyalty, work in a group mode, is not needed in command and control alienated mega societies. Check out, the more "Modern" a society is, the more lacking the range of human functionality of its members is. The deterioration can happen very quickly, just listen to your grand parents when they talk about the loss of values and natural healthy interactions they have witnessed in their lifetime. We don't know how far down can this process go, this is what is so scary about it.

""A hunter-gatherer who did not correctly conceive a solution to providing food or shelter probably died, along with his/her progeny, whereas a modern Wall Street executive that made a similar conceptual mistake would receive a substantial bonus and be a more attractive mate."

Or a bad teacher being rewarded with tenure and social status.

However, the findings of the new study conducted in China are not consistent with these theories because the results indicated that it was not.... and why with first theory this is not consistent ? they dont say about about part but all brain. "Many scientists have argued that bigger doesn’t always mean better. Duke University anthropologist Brian Hare says "the decrease in brain size is actually an evolutionary advantage"

What more there was some study in 2011 http://phys.org/news/2011-02-brains-smarter.html. we have shrunk brain indeed but have better conectivity. The authors of a study published in 2012 maintained t - link you give here denies " Instead, removing the pressure for everyone to be a superb hunter or gatherer may have allowed us to evolve a more diverse population with different types of smarts, he said."

Size Matters: Scientists Prove People With Big Heads Are Smarter ~
The science on big heads is out, and size matters. Big heads lead to big developed brains in the cranial cavity that equate to more often than not, Secrets of the Pyramid Brain Image1 Size Matters : Scientists Prove People With Big Heads Are Smartera higher intelligence. This does not mean that all people who have a large head are very smart or that the smaller your head and smaller you brain, the less intelligent you are. Please keep in mind that there are exceptions to this rule as there are with almost all rules of life. But the scientific facts are that brain size is a factor in how smart an animal or mammal is, and if people with big heads are able to tap more of that brain matter than that of their smaller headed cousins, then they can become more intelligent.

Specific Genes Linked to Big Brains and Intelligence

Brain size and smarts are, to some extent, genetic — and now, a team of more than 200 researchers has uncovered specific genes that are linked to both brain volume and IQ.

Though scientists have suggested bigger brains are “smarter,” this study is the strongest case yet for a genetic connection to brain size and to IQ. Of course, brain size is not 100 percent correlated with a person’s intelligence, and other factors, including connections between brain cells and even a person’s experiences play a role.

“We found fairly unequivocal proof supporting a genetic link to brain function and intelligence. For the first time, we have watertight evidence of how these genes affect the brain,” said lead researcher Paul Thompson, a neurologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine.

I always have wondered if my gigantic head could be a genetic physical trait passed to me from my ancestors, and now I think my intuition has led me to the light. When I say my head is gigantic, I really mean it, in which it has caused me some problems while I was growing up. From being a top head heavy kid- who has actually cracked open his skull numerous times, to never having helmets fit my head correctly, and to currently having to buy my hats from BigHatStore.com.

What I had thought was some sort of birth defect is actually a genetic trait passed down to me by my ancestors. For example: A relative of mine Charles Joseph Bonaparte, the grandnephew of Napoleon who first organized the “detective force of special agents” of the Department of Justice- now known as G-men, who was also Secretary of the Navy and later, Attorney General in the cabinet of Theodore Roosevelt. Charles Bonaparte was described as “A vast round, rugged head; a double-decker head; a cannon ball head, like a warrior’s, with room for two sets of brains, bald and shiny.” His hair and eyes were jet black, his hands and feet small. He had the clear ruddy complexion of an outdoorsman. He constantly wore black, carried an umbrella – not a cane – and looked like a “studious professor.” He did much of his thinking on the street, striding briskly along, his massive head-“with curious rises over the temples”-swaying from side to side.

Brain is Shrinking due to Domestication of Brain.

Why should we worry? Humans adopt, just like animals, so maybe shrinking what we don't nee everyday and vv, is a normal process.

Just look around in a bus in the early mornings. All those bent heads apping away like crazy, checking facebook.  Just try and see how many of the younger generation don't think an original thought all day. Too much work.  I'm a teacher I should know.

They don't need to think, they function on automatic pilot, there's no need to think.

Also for most of us there is  no need to be alert all day, life is easy and safe.

So  brain parts shrink.

Wen needed over a long period of time, the necessary parts will grow again.

I think it more likely intelligence has to do with how  the brain is wired and not brain size.  If my hypothesis is true then it doesn't matter if our brains are shrinking or not as we may end up with a streamlined brain size that is super-intelligent.  Ah our next stage in human evolution!  Love it!!

Then again, if my hypothesis is wrong then we are all destined to become total idiots and that means our species is DOOMED!  Yes DOOMED I tell ya!!!  LOL

Oh well, I'm off to swing in some trees again.

The brain size is linked to intelligence. And the human beings are becoming more and more stupid. In the past decade the IQ in western countries has dropped about 2 points and that is significant. This is just a sample article – food for thought.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/22/people-getting-dumber-human-int...

The powers that be are shrinking our brains by giving it less to feed on. Film, Television, and the rubbish we are fed, tend to dumb us down, and it is working well.
The human brain has great potential, but if we keep being fed rubbish, we will eventually loose whatever potential we have.
We are not even capable of making good decisitons about our earth. Instead, we are fed rubbish.
It is time to take back control again, and use our brains in more demanding areas.

"The brain size is linked to intelligence" yes showing that smallest is more efficient. In past comment I give reference to article Your reference is little flawed first they use reaction time test so its only one from many aspects and in this aspect can be so many confounding factors wich falws results like time when the test was performed weather and many others. They also claim that: "Western countries conducted between 1889 and 2004 to estimate the decline in g that may have resulted from the presence of dysgenic fertility"

As I wrote smallest brain can be due to reorganization of white matters and grey matter (when teenage brain develop mature it lose grey matter) this is because is create conectivity good example are professional gaming players they have less matter in brain regions which allow them to be a good player but they are more effective than control group, due to connectivity. P.S in my country I hold MD in neurology and toxicology so this is not only my hobby but also profession.

One fragment from article which I reference "But the downsizing does not mean modern humans are dumber than their ancestors -- rather, they simply developed different, more sophisticated forms of intelligence, said Brian Hare, an assistant professor of anthropology at Duke University.
He noted that the same phenomenon can be observed in domestic animals compared to their wild counterparts.
So while huskies may have smaller brains than wolves, they are smarter and more sophisticated because they can understand human communicative gestures, behaving similarly to human children.

From studies we can conclude that average people are less inteligent but this is due to increased borns in families with lower inteligence. Good example my co-workers many of them dont have childrens but my olders from high school frends who did not go to college have average 2 childs.

Please ignore my comment to you from darek1001989 wrote on 24 November, 2014 - 01:22 it was accident.

Darek, no matter the degrees you have ... this won't change the fact the brain size is linked to intelligence. Maybe not 100%, but it is linked. Don't forget that our big step in evolution as humans was doubling our brain capacity... Of course brain size also depends on the body size.

You brought the example with huskies being more intelligent. That is also not true. Been able to communicate with humans and adjust to human behaviour does not make them more intelligent, because during this process they have lost major skills that wolves have.

There is no proof for what Brian Hare suggests (and there will never be), it is just a theory.

Now back to humans, having no major change in human body size and suddenly our brains beginning to shrink … then this becomes an issue. And it is a fact the IQ is decreasing, it is not a matter of debate.

The less you use your brain the smaller it becomes, that’s also plain evolution theory (devolution in our case) – whatever is not needed is discarded.

There is plenty of research linking the brain size to intelligence. Here is another example:

http://www.livescience.com/19692-genes-brain-size-intelligence.html

You reference is the best I wrote about this in past comments someone wrote very good coment that I dont need add anything "brain size has to do with the size of the organism. This is stupid, Especially when he says things like " unequivocal proof " followed by "couldn't review enough brain scans to obtain definitive results" ... yeah no kidding, cuz there is a vast amount of evidence that correlates brain size to body size. It's observable in mammals and you can trace it archaeologically looking at hominin evolution. A huge portion of your brain runs autonomic functions" "There is no proof... the proof is simple and I can give you maturation of brain (mostly grey matter) "There is plenty of research linking the brain size to intelligence. Here is another example:" and even one from them cannot proof if the correlation is causal Nisbett et al. 2012b, and most of them show IQ correlates more with gray matter volume which I wrote you that when brain mature lose size in grey matter Allen et al., 2002 found that brain volumes do not correlate strongly with other and more specific cognitive measures. Nisbett et al. 2012b Evidence conflicts on the question of whether brain size variation also predicts intelligence between siblings, with some studies finding moderate correlations and others finding none, whats more the same author found that crude brain size is unlikely to be a good measure of IQ, for example brain size also differs between men and women, but without documented differences in IQ "There is no proof for what Brian Hare suggests (and there will never be), it is just a theory." science always start in theory

"The less you use your brain the smaller it becomes, that’s also plain evolution theory (devolution in our case) – whatever is not needed is discarded" mostly because lose connection but many mentall disease increase grey matter and after treatments this regions shows decreased size which correlate with improvment. Even in this article you can find statments that many claims about size is wrong "Many scientists have argued that bigger doesn’t always mean better. Duke University anthropologist Brian Hare says "the decrease in brain size is actually an evolutionary advantage" because it could indicate we're evolving into a less aggressive animal. For example, the common chimpanzees have bigger brains than bonobos, but they are less likely to resolve issues through teamwork because they're more aggressive." Also read new article "Beware, Playing Lots of Chess Will Shrink Your Brain!" which shows like they state what I also point you "Moreover, localised brain shrinkage can be a sign of increased neural efficiency. Also it’s worth remembering how, through adolescence, our brains don’t just keep getting bigger and bigger; rather they undergo a massive pruning back of excess grey matter."

We use glasses instead of exercizing our eyes.
We use artificial light instead of adapting ourselves for the night. We block the stars.
We use calculators instead of calculating ourselves.
We use maps instead of measuring distances with our eyes and feet.
We are far removed from our food and water, it is processed, genetically altered, filled with antibiotics, poisons, products we don't even know enough about.
We don't care about the geometry of our houses, offices, temples, as long as it fits our immediate needs, it's fine.
We take medication for everything instead of figuring out the source of our problems.
We disregard nature completely
We are constantly compensating, letting the world change or suffer so that we cease to change and suffer. Of course, in a situation like that, we are bound to lose intelligence as much we lose muscle when we don't use it.

Of course, in a situation like that, we are bound to lose intelligence as much we lose muscle when we don't use it. only you some how lose intelligence, because we have smaller brain with increased intelligence. Your statments We... only show your lack of knowledge.
"We use glasses instead of exercizing our eyes" many refractive errors are due to shape of cornea not muscle only some of them are from using near subject but only small % of all refractive errors.
"We use artificial light instead " from when people use artificial light when fire was invented.
"We use calculators instead of calculating ourselves." again since abacus was invented
"We use maps instead of measuring distances with our eyes and feet" I dont even know how comment this you use map to measuring distances? I use to find location.
"We are far removed from our food and water, it is processed, genetically altered, filled with antibiotics, poisons, products we don't even know enough about." here is true you really " don't even know enough about" but dont think that others also. When you wrote about something read about that firs antibiotics animals are slaughteredafter they detox antibiotics so you will get very low amount iif any. poisons- first rule of toxicology the dose make poison, and lower dose can be beneficial read about hormesis also you think that something natural cannot be toxic in proper dose? look at bella donna and others herbs shrooms etc. "We are far removed from our food and water" read about how many people was poisoned by water in ancient times compared to our times this called by you poisons protect you against this bacterias. "We don't care about the geometry of our houses, offices, temples, as long as it fits our immediate needs, it's fine."you get evil spirit from that....what does this have to do with our brains? "We take medication for everything instead of figuring out the source of our problems" people treat thersefl by herbs which are also medication look at traditional chinese medicine from how long they use herbs to heal. "We are constantly compensating, letting the world change or suffer so that we cease to change and suffer. Of course, in a situation like that, we are bound to lose intelligence as much we lose muscle when we don't use it." the biggest stupidity I read in this month. So compared to you people wich customize environment to their need use magic no inteligence? Thats why our inteligence increase because we use our brains to change world for us, so we use more brains than in past ours body dont evolve because our brains do creating world for us, and smallest brain means that have better connection and can work more effective. Of course you most likely dont use your brain (your comment show that) so you are at risk to lose him. In conclusion you want to show some intelligence but turned out you only shows your incompetence.

P.S about We use glasses instead of exercizing our eyes" many refractive errors are due to shape of cornea not muscle only some of them are from using near subject but only small % of all refractive errors. that why you exercise cant do anything and glasses dont cause that your vision will detorate look at studies which research that.

Glee

I agree with you our brain is very plastic there are even few case where people have 70% damage from stroke and their brain reorganize and create connection which allow them function normally. What expierience you give brain so you will had a brain. "Film, Television" I will say that contents cause effect there can be highly stimulating programs on tv and I see recently study which shows some benefits to brain from wathing tv. But also dumg programs can be beneficial because our brains must sometimes rest and with little stimulated programs have good opportunity(there are some studies showing correlation with overworking brain and neurodegenerative diseases) We can conclude that average people are less inteligent but this is due to increased borns in families with lower inteligence. Many video games gets attention among rehabilitants. SO as I say contents not device cause stimulation to brain and this organs can adapt to virtualy all situation.

The human brain has great potential, but if we keep being fed rubbish, we will eventually loose whatever potential we have.you not lose potential from fed brain rubbish but you brain with age need more time to rewire. So you will need more time to increase your brain efficiency but dont lose this ability to change except childrens due to brain growth(development wrong stimulation can alter brain growth in some regions).

McKenna taught us that the human brain became exponentially larger through the use of psychedelic mushrooms. The mushrooms made us smart enough to sustain ourselves and psilocybin became phased out of our diet. We are living in kind of a reverse stoned ape theory.

"psychedelic mushrooms." can increase neurogenesis in hippocampus ("Effects of psilocybin on hippocampal neurogenesis and extinction of trace fear conditioning") like cannabis exersise and many other things. They phased out of our diet cant be significant cause of smaller brain because there are manny substitutes its effects.P.S His theory say mostly that shrooms cause development of language not intelligence per se "The real impact did come at higher doses, according to McKenna’s theory, because it was at the higher doses that man was inspired to use sound to put images into another’s head. Language development saw immense growth during this period, and the Stoned Ape Theory insinuates experiences on mushrooms helped further this development along" He has also other theory
"McKenna theorizes intelligence might have made its way to our planet via spore-bearing intelligent life that traveled to Earth in cosmic radiation, much like what is described in the Crick Theory of Panspermia." So please dont spread misinformation about author who clearly state that this is only assumption nothing else.

That's why it's called a "theory."

Once upon a time Earth gravitation was smaller than it is now due to the young age of our planet earth and its higher electric and geomagnetic charge within. Everything was easier than it appears to us now - the walking of the people our ancestors the giants, the stone constructions like the pyramids and the circle sanctuaries built everywhere around the planet.
Even the life of the giants was longer than ours due to the smaller earth gravitation. Our ancestors the Nephilims were granted by their God Father Ra with long life (900 -1000 years) as it is narrated in the Bible.
Our ancestors were very wise enlightened people and they had their intuition and inner senses much more developped than we have them today.
If you want to immagine how life of our ancestors was once upon a time you better see once again the film Avatar. Our ancestors had big and very well developed beautiful bodies, smaller heads and intuitive wisdom of no comparison nowadays.
The changing Earth gravitation is the reason for the cranial trepanation, cranial deformation, blood letting medical practices of the ancient Bulgarians who spread all over the globe after the Bibical flood in Black Sea in around 5500 BC. Ancient ancestors had to coope with the changing earth conditions as well. They are humans with some slight diferences from the today human cranes - instead of three plates on top they had two plates. And this peculiarity has an explanation - they were giants, nephilims and their heads were easier to be born by a giant mother as it is today for mothers to give birth. You remember what the Bible says: after Adam and Eve were thrown out of the paradise woman was sentenced by God to give birth with difficulty.
That explains also why our giant ancestors had to build pyramids and to dig holes in the mountain rocks on special geomagnetic spots on Earth. They used to do that for milenia in Bulgarian mountains as well - our country is famous with its ancient miraculous mountains and their sanctuaries. On these holy spots Ancient Bulgarians used to perform spiritual rituals today called Mysteries and to energise their bodies & minds with the earth geomagnetism.

Dont you just love reading how creative some of these comments are, such as Aliya's? So free thinking is still very much alive and well despite some of the comments to the contrary.

Observe how creatures with small brains do things we are unable to do. Birds fly, bees fly, even though theoretically OUR brainy scientists say they should not be able to! There are insects with dozens of legs, their brains can separately control-think about it!- and creatures who have more sense faculties than us. Can you see a mouse from a mile up in the sky!?

So the idea from our brains that the size of our brains matters is somewhat dickheaded, if you’ll pardon my French, or is it Bulgarian?

It is widely scientifically accepted theory that our brains grew particularly large due to the new predominant food source once our ancestors were caught in geological and climate change of East Africa. Previously predominantly plant eating omnivores in dense jungle (like other apes), our ancestors encountered life in now dry savanna, with very little fruit and mainly grass or grass-eaters available. Homo Robustus made evolutionary choice of becoming grass eater. Brain did not grow in that species and it got extinct. Our ancestors chose to eat more grass-eaters. Becoming predominantly meat-eating omnivores. By all scientific accounts a positive feedback loop established from this that led to our advance: eating more meat->growing larger brain->using larger brain to get even more meat->even larger and more capable brain...
What happened about 10000 years ago? Agriculture. Food processing (before that time humans not only couldn't collect enough say, grains from the wild to cover the energy spent in the effort but neither than or now can we eat it without processing). Move to food based more in grains than meat. Certain large amount of proteins in the diet is required for having a larger brain. Now we have different challenges such brain might address but the core of the new change is in the diet, food, not lack of evolutionary challenge and selection.

Given that (a) yes, brain size makes a demonstrable difference in current human intelligence.
And given that (b) it's unclear whether our brains are getting smaller or whether more of the smaller humans are breeding in cities. (which appears to be the case since cities are genetic and IQ sinks). And given that (c) we have been selecting for immaturity for 10K years (paedomorphic selection). And given that (d) women generally possess superior verbal skills and weaker modeling skills despite smaller brains.

I would hypothesize that all of the above are driving down AVERAGE brain size.
I would suggest we will saw additional paedomorphic selection domestication up and until the period of 'Peak Human' which I suspect was around 1500 bc.
And that at present we are seeing a rapid expansion of dysgenic classes, tilting the data dramatically.
Unfortunately I suspect that the initial shift caused by the adoption of general rules (science) rather than rules of specific cases (recipes), as well as the reduction in the malnutrition at the bottom (left) of the curve, means that the downward shift in genetic iq and brain size from underclass reproduction is being hidden by the flynn effect. But in real terms, on average we are getting smaller, more verbal brains, and a lot more dumb people breeding.

Love the comment : maybe because we are becoming less aggressive ? Have they looked at the all the conflicts around the world? Modern society has become too sit on the sofa watch garbage which for the most part is stupid, targeting the lowest of ethics oversexed and mind-numbing or sitting at a computer for 8 hours, and the trolls who sit in a darken room and stare at multiple screens for days on end. if the zombies ever attack----humankind may not survive and I hate to say this -- a concentrated - one goal species LOL
