Sumerian creation myth

The origins of human beings according to ancient Sumerian texts

(Read the article on one page)

Sumer, or the ‘land of civilized kings’, flourished in Mesopotamia, now modern-day Iraq, around 4500 BC. Sumerians created an advanced civilization with its own system of elaborate language and writing, architecture and arts, astronomy and mathematics. Their religious system was a complex one comprised of hundreds of gods. According to the ancient texts, each Sumerian city was guarded by its own god; and while humans and gods used to live together, the humans were servants to the gods.

The Sumerian creation myth can be found on a tablet in Nippur, an ancient Mesopotamian city founded in approximately 5000 BC.

The creation of Earth ( Enuma Elish ) according to the Sumerian tablets begins like this:

When in the height heaven was not named,
And the earth beneath did not yet bear a name,
And the primeval Apsu, who begat them,
And chaos, Tiamut, the mother of them both
Their waters were mingled together,
And no field was formed, no marsh was to be seen;
When of the gods none had been called into being,
And none bore a name, and no destinies were ordained;
Then were created the gods in the midst of heaven,
Lahmu and Lahamu were called into being...

Sumerian mythology claims that, in the beginning, human-like gods ruled over Earth. When they came to the Earth, there was much work to be done and these gods toiled the soil, digging to make it habitable and mining its minerals.

The texts mention that at some point the gods mutinied against their labour.

When the gods like men
Bore the work and suffered the toll
The toil of the gods was great,
The work was heavy, the distress was much.

Anu, the god of gods, agreed that their labour was too great. His son Enki, or Ea, proposed to create man to bear the labour, and so, with the help of his half-sister Ninki, he did. A god was put to death, and his body and blood was mixed with clay. From that material the first human being was created, in likeness to the gods.

You have slaughtered a god together
With his personality
I have removed your heavy work
I have imposed your toil on man.

In the clay, god and man
Shall be bound,
To a unity brought together;
So that to the end of days
The Flesh and the Soul
Which in a god have ripened –
That soul in a blood-kinship be bound.

This first man was created in Eden, a Sumerian word which means ‘flat terrain’. In the Epic of Gilgamesh , Eden is mentioned as the garden of the gods and is located somewhere in Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

Initially human beings were unable to reproduce on their own, but were later modified with the help of Enki and Ninki. Thus, Adapa was created as a fully functional and independent human being. This ‘modification’ was done without the approval of Enki’s brother, Enlil, and a conflict between the gods began. Enlil became the adversary of man, and the Sumerian tablet mentions that men served gods and went through much hardship and suffering.

Adapa, with the help of Enki, ascended to Anu where he failed to answer a question about ‘the bread and water of life’. Opinions vary on the similarities between this creation story and the biblical story of Adam and Eve in Eden.

Single sourced perhaps, but the one thing the Sumerian, Egyptian, nor INDIAN accounts cannot take credit for is the racism against blacks which can be linked directly to the 'Noah and his 3 sons' story or the 'curse of Ham'. That bit of biblical nonsense was widely used in the 19th century to support slavery. Its repercussions can still be felt today.

It is possible creation myths are all single sourced.
Below is the Egyptian creation myth:
Ancient Egyptian creation myth posits a void of nothingness Nun. The creative principle Atum parts the void. Atum breaths out Maat. Atum breaths in Maat and breaths out Tefnut and Shu.

I am particularly fond of this creation myth as it has beautiful symmetry.

A void of nothing. No movement, no wave, no flow, stygian silence.
A creative principle, a prime mover, a first action - Atum.
A part in nothingness.
Before all, Maat.

Nothing can begin before the symmetry, the perfection, the exactness deified by Maat

Perhaps a catastrophe due to the 41,000 y ago Phlagaran Field volcanos followed by the 40,000 global magnetic reversal disrupted a civilization that was in contact with all groups but had to restart after the 'flood,' each going its own way.

Commentationes Eruditi Nike Immanuelis Philologus de Inundantia Noe et Paradisum.

Regarding the Flood of Noah ..

Genesis 7:11 & 12
11. In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened. 12: The rain fell upon the earth for forty days and forty nights.

Genesis 7:19 & 20
19. The water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains everywhere under the heavens were covered. 20: The water prevailed fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered (an additional 15 cubits above the top of the highest mountain, roughly 20 feet)…

Genesis 7:24. The water prevailed upon the earth one hundred and fifty days.

Genesis 8:1 - 8:7
1: But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided (the "water began to subside" is the more accurate translation). 2: Also the fountains of the deep and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained; 3: and the water receded (began to recede) steadily from the earth, and at the end of one hundred and fifty days the water decreased. 4: In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. 5: The water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains became visible. 6: Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made; 7: and he sent out a raven, and it flew here and there until the water was dried up from the earth.…

So what we have is .. From the time it began to rain, it continued until the highest mountain tops were covered by an additional 15 cubits of water (we do not know the height of the highest mountain prior to the flood, but the text says hills AND mountains, so they knew the difference). At this point God brought the rains to an end, the water begins to subside, and after 150 days the waters had decreased significantly enough for the Ark to come to rest upon the mountains of Ararat. This took seven months to occur, and after an additional three months (in the tenth month) the tops of the surrounding mountains became visible. Then, after an additional forty days (in the eleventh month), Noah releases a raven which apparently flew here and there until the water had completely subsided and the land appeared, most likely it was still muddy at this point. Its being a bird of prey, it was therefore able to sustain itself by feeding on carrion.

The entire duration of the flood from the beginning of the rain until the waters had completely subsided is uncertain as we are given no length of time for that. What is given is that the rain lasted for 40 days, another 150 days passed until the Ark rested on Ararat, thus giving us a total of 190 days. Another 3 months pass before the tops of the surrounding mountains became visable, another 40 days pass before Noah releases the raven. Thus with the previous total of 190 days we add to that another 90 days (3 months), and another 40 days, which brings the total to 320 days, so roughly 45 days short of one year. Until the flood waters were completely gone from that point (the appearence of the land), and when the land became dry, we don't know, but all told, what we are talking about is a tremendous amount of water and a lengthy period of time.

Thus those who have said it all lasted for 40 days are wrong; that was only the number of days it rained. The person who said the total height of the flood was 15 cubits is wrong too. These statements are what is referred to as "disinformation," ie: incomplete or altered information which is purposefully given to mislead so one will draw the wrong conclusion. Of course in the case of some, they simply may not know from lack of research. In the case of others it is pure deceit, being done to further their own agenda.

Now regarding Eden ..it's being a prison, and the expulsion from.

What I have read in several comments is taken completely from Luciferian doctrine. This states that God is an evil and unjust God who keeps Adam and Eve prisoners in the garden against their will, and denies them any knowledge at all. Then Lucifer or his agent Satan appears to them in the form of a serpent, and convinces Eve to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. He does so by convincing Eve that God has been lying to them, that "thou surely will not die, but shall become as gods."

No, they were not kept prisoners in the Garden, it was a Paradise, all that was needed was provided for them within it. Outside of Eden was desolation, everything needed had to be worked for, food scarce, life unpalatable. Adam and Eve could have left Eden anytime, it was not surrounded by walls visible or invisible, or guards to keep them in; but why would they have wanted to leave ? They were not ignorant or lacking in fundamental knowledge; Adam had named all the animals and vegetation of the earth. All was perfect in their eyes, and all was good. In a sense they were as innocent children. The only thing they did not know was the difference between right and wrong/good and evil. All they knew and followed were the ways of God, not the ways of man.

I would propose that if one had the choice to live in Eden/Paradise where all your needs were met, life was was without strife or worry of any kind, and there was no evil of any type, one would definitely choose to live in Eden. Come on now, you can't tell me that if there is only ONE THING you cannot have, you could not live without it. No, no one was a prisoner in Eden, and Eden was never a prison.

The Luciferian doctrine is supported by those known as the Illuminati; Freemasonry; Theosophy and it's offshoot, the New Age movements. Luciferian doctrine is part and parcel of the New World Order, the combined One World Government and Religion that is being put in place by the United Nations under the leadership of the aforementioned supporters of the Luciferian doctrine. This can all be researched by anyone wishing to know the TRUTH.

If there are any misspelled words, just overlook them; I promise you will survive.

I’m adding to what I just wrote … All the never ending false information concerning astrological events in the heavens, the Milky Way, cosmic boat star formations, the endless semi-scientific gibberish, and all else that has been said in comment on this subject outside of biblical reference is there to serve one purpose only, to discredit any and all belief in God and the events as told in the Bible. That’s it pure and simple, period.

Someone talking about “now we are in the “Age of Reason” .. no, we are in the Age of Awesome Deception (an Islamic term for the present age, the age of the Dajjal/Anti-Christ/False Messiah). During this time many both powerful and small will attempt to turn people away from God; leaders of governments and religions will conspire together and tell monstrous lies; and deceit will be the rule of day. When you hear the words “now we’re in the Age of Reason,” all the person means by saying them is “you must do away with your belief in God, there is no other option.”

You know, the Flood has been accounted for by all the peoples of the earth. The stories of it cross borders and cultures everywhere. It is written according to the belief systems, and cultural milieu of each individual people. Yet the facts are the same, there was a worldwide deluge that destroyed the former world and killed the majority of mankind. Only small groups of people survived, along with whatever animals they managed to save. All the people of the world state that this occurred, and it happened to them. This was not some story a person heard from someone else and passed on to the next person who took it back to his own people, and then adopted it as their own. Sorry to burst some people’s bubbles, but this was a REAL worldwide flood.

My own belief is that the Flood of Noah, and the Sinking of Atlantis, both speak of this same event. “And the waters of the flood covered the earth” “And Atlantis sank beneath the waves;” and in both cases the former world and civilization was destroyed. Also in both cases, and in the other tellings of the event, the flood came about because of the same reason, divine judgment due to the wickedness of mankind.  Same story, only told in a different manner according to the cultural mileau of the people telling of the event, just as it was by ALL the peoples of the earth.

Yes people, a real flood, and consequences for our actions. And don’t give me any of this “how evil and vengeful this God of yours must be to do this to those he says he loves, no God would do that, therefor there must not be a God.” Please, when your parents punish you it’s not because they do not love you, and it sure doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Yes people, a real worldwide flood .. deal with it !!

Noah's Sacrifice - watercolor circa 1896–1902 by James Tissot
The imperfect state of archaeological researches in the Near East impedes any definite identification of the original race or races that created the earliest civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt. According to Gordon Childe, however, the predominant racial element in the earliest graves in the region from Elam to the Danube is the ‘Mediterranean’.

The ancient and mysterious Sphinx, Giza, Egypt.
In 1995, NBC televised a prime-time documentary hosted by actor Charlton Heston and directed by Bill Cote, called Mystery of the Sphinx. The program centered on the research and writings of John Anthony West, a (non-academic) Egyptologist, who, along with Dr. Robert Schoch, a professor of Geology at Boston University, made an astounding discovery on the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt.

Our Mission

At Ancient Origins, we believe that one of the most important fields of knowledge we can pursue as human beings is our beginnings.
