Hindu tradition has long held the belief that this strip of land was a bridge built by their beloved deity Rama as described in the Hindu epic the Ramayana. It has been referred to since antiquity as "Rama's Bridge" or Rama Setu.
The Ram Setu claim has been riddled with opinions and counter opinions. While there are those who believe that it was built by Vanar Sena (army of apes) and hence cannot be touched, others claim that it is a naturally formed chain of lime shoals.
The Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) under the HRD ministry will conduct an underwater exploration study to find out.
